“This is not only an attack against WCK, this is an attack on humanitarian organizations showing up in the most dire of situations where food is being used as a weapon of war,” World Central Kitchen CEO Erin Gore said in a statement. “This is unforgivable.”

Two polar bears came close to Ice Harbour hut of the Dutch exped. on 30 March, 1597.
🐻‍❄️🐻‍❄️

The men stranded off NE Novaya Zemlya were on constant watch for bears & needed to be ready to react.

Excited to speak later this spring in Charleston, WV, about my book ONE LONG NIGHT and how humans decided to preemptively round up civilians and detain them in camps. Save the date: May 19. (Part of the Little Lectures series of the WW Humanities Council.) wvhumanities.org/event/event-61…

I am begging people to (1) look at the bigger picture, and (2) stop trying to paint groups of people as threats because of where they were born.

The former is necessary if we want to talk actual solutions, and the latter is necessary if we want to uphold American values.

My reflex to correct “but they voted for Hamas” comes from the reporter corner of my brain, but I gotta admit it plays into a specious argument. For very good reasons the laws of war do not derive from polling a hostile population. Civilians are civilians.

A court in Moscow today upheld the extension of WSJ reporter Evan Gershkovich's arrest. Evan will soon have spent one year in the notorious Lefortovo jail. Days after Alexei Navalny's death, I worry more than ever about our friend Evan

The tyrant lives in such a state of weakness and fear that open denunciation by one person—convicted, in prison, in Arctic exile a thousand miles away—becomes an existential threat.

The “moral top of the world where the light never really goes out.” After the recent Tucker Carlson-Putin debacle, I keep thinking of Edmund Wilson writing this from Moscow during the height of Soviet repression. (Photo from The Secret History of Vladimir Nabokov.)

Bland recycled platitudes over actual facts: the Biden admin actually engaged in extensive diplomacy with Canada (leading to the 2023 update to the Safe Third Country agreement) specifically because tens of thousands of people were “just walking over” into Canada to seek asylum.

Thank you to everyone who came out tonight to the Kosciuszko Foundation to talk about civilian networks supporting Ukrainians on the front lines! It was a full house, and a wonderful audience. (Left to right: Dr. Olga Shpak, Anna Husarska, Art Davidson, and yours truly.)
