Despite two weeks of early releases under SDS40, prison numbers are climbing upwards once more. The prison population in England and Wales now stands at 86,406. It has increased by 73 in the last seven days.

There are 82,953 people in men's prisons and 3,453 in women's prisons. By the prison service's own measure of safe and decent accommodation, there is room for only 79,333 people in the system. The population is 7,073 above this level.
