The Lahontan cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii henshawi) from a fantastic day snorkeling with these these threatened fish. I have some images I like better but this is the only 1 with 8 fish in a single frame!

The neatest natural event happening right now in California & almost no one knows about it. The Lahontan redsides are spawning! At this time of year, they get colorful and look more like a tropical fish from the Amazon than something you'd see in a cold CA mountain creek.

Two of California's largest aquatic salamanders. The CA tiger salamander lives in oxygen poor seasonal ponds and has large external gills to pull 02 whereas the CA giant salamander lives in well oxygenated cold streams and can get by with smaller gills.

Social media tells me its #worldsnakeday - here's a random assortment of some of a few of the snakes I've photographed in years prior. Do you recognize all the species?

Bucket full of endangered frogs that needed to be relocated to the other side of their habitat for their safety. Handled under permit and photographed a few seconds prior to release

Well, it's official: Hakai Magazine is ceasing publication at the end of the year because our funding is being cut. I'm incredibly sad for my colleagues, for the freelance community, for the journalism ecosystem as a whole, and for myself. Editing for Hakai has been a dream.

Digging into photos from #WCH10 & Borneo. A juvenile cat gecko (Aeluroscalabotes felinus) - cat geckos are distantly related to all other geckos in Borneo & are part of the Eublepharidae family along with Coleonyx & leopard geckos. No other members of the family occur in Borneo.

The 1st snake I photographed in Borneo was this gorgeous Sabah pitviper (Trimeresurus sabahi) - this individual was found emerging from a hole at the base of a tree deep in the forest after a rainstorm. Made its way up into low vegetation & coiled up there.

After jungle hikes and weddings, finally back home in CA. This little leaf nosed viper (Craspedocephalus borneensis) was the last snake for me in Borneo & a species I'd nearly given up hope of seeing on this trip. But long nighthikes pay off!

A little dusky earless agama (Aphaniotis fusca) from one of the last nights in Borneo. At 1st look, a spindly dun colored lizard - but really quite neat when seen close up.

The effort to save Hakai Magazine.com is fully underway. So far, we've lined up commitments worth about half of what we need to keep publishing. Ideally, we want one or two more large foundations or donations to give us a solid floor before we throw the doors to reader donations.

Back from my yearly pilgrimage to visit the largest salamanders in the Americas. There is no other feeling like watching a massive hellbender crawl along the bottom of the stream as the current causes its loose skin to flutter. Like being transported to a different time.
