I don’t think PhD is just a research only position. PhDs should also get trained to teach. But I agree that PhDs should focus on research in first year. I made it mandatory for my phd students to TA twice before they graduate.

Great thread, and another good opportunity to plug MilaQuebec. The intellectual and cultural vibes here at Mila and in Montreal are hard to beat and unique.

Apply here by Dec 1: mila.quebec/en/supervision…

Great 🧵!
I ended up in 🇨🇦 for my undergrad because of a total fluke. I'm so glad I did!
If I had one piece of advice for my 17-year old self it'd be: apply to Canada!
And also: that thing you really like is called 'Computer Science', so apply there, not to 'Management InfoSys'.

Great thread from Gautam Kamath on why Canada is an excellent choice for early-career AI scientists.
🇨🇦 World-class supervisors
🇨🇦 Safe, inclusive cities
🇨🇦 Reasonable visas
🇨🇦 Good industry connections
🦆(And sorry, but the geese aren't *that* impolite)

Choosing Canada over the US is one of the best decisions I have made, no visa issues, more focus on science, and great funding!

GitHub copilot, with 'public code' blocked, emits large chunks of my copyrighted code, with no attribution, no LGPL license. For example, the simple prompt 'sparse matrix transpose, cs_' produces my cs_transpose in CSparse. My code on left, github on right. Not OK.

Time to stop stereotyping India like this! Just look around. All your major companies (including this Twitter) are run by Indians and that should give you some clue.

This! In all these years, we didn’t see the need to label Unix, Linux, Windows etc “foundation software”.

In ML “foundation model” serves exactly 2 purposes:
1) an opportunity for academics to coin a new term as a citation grab.
2) a fancy marketing term to sell you a service

Canada is looking for talented immigrants and you can get your PR in a year and citizenship in less than 5 years (outside Quebec). These H1B visa holders should just consider moving to Toronto :)
