Time for a reintroduction! I'm Dr. Adam Netzer Zimmer and I'm a biocultural anthropologist focusing on the history of medicine. I study how and why medical institutions acquire ancestral remains for teaching purposes, especially in Iceland 🇮🇸 and the USA 🇺🇸

I wrote about some of the comments/questions on last week's post about the fundamental genetic differences between IQ and height.

Sasha Gusev recent excellent piece (open.substack.com/pub/theinfinit…) on how height and IQ are genetically quite different got me thinking about what a trait is and why even silly things can be heritable. So, let’s start out with the question “what’s a trait?” 1/17

Can & have given talks on everything in this piece. Not sure why it's scandalizing folks or what's not get - this is the landscape of caregiving in the US.

Basic mutation and recombination parameters are surprisingly conserved from mammals to zebra finch. Thread about our preprint, by lead author PRENTOUT Djivan:

Really enjoyed meeting Mendoza and sitting next to him with my 10-year old during spring training a decade ago. Such a love of the game...

I wrote about the paucity of genetic evidence for very recent selective sweeps and the generally odd and sporadic nature of the ones we do see. A 🧵:

Taken together, the data supports a largely neutral model of recent locus-specific evolution; there's simply not enough time and too much dynamic population change. The few loci that do get swept up appear to be simple mechanisms or just dumb luck.

Congratulations to Ali Akbari Ali Akbari on his amazing new work on selection in Western Eurasia that is finally released as a preprint after years of painstaking work. Accompanying it is a selection browser (beta) reich-ages.rc.hms.harvard.edu biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

Really interesting new paper from Akbari et al. identifying a lot more selection in ancient DNA than previous approaches. I think it gets at three core challenges for this type of analysis where our understanding is still limited. 🧵
