I’ll (try to) shut up about #thepowerofparting for a while after this post. But, now that the deal is a matter of public record, I wanted to share this tidbit from the latest @publisherswkly which offers a more detailed description of my book than I could offer on social before

It’s August. And that means that Biden’s Title IX regulation is now in effect. And it required *all faculty* to become mandatory reporters. Survivor advocates opposed this change. Let me tell you why and what you can do about it in your classroom.

Dr. Nicole Bedera (@nbedera) 's Twitter Profile Photo

The research is clear. Mandatory reporting doesn’t reduce sexual violence. It actually *decreases* investigations. Its primary function is to strip survivors of their agency. And surveil them.

Dr. Nicole Bedera (@nbedera) 's Twitter Profile Photo

This happens three main ways: 1. Survivors can’t seek help, advocate for themselves, or share their experiences if they worry they will be reported. 2. Survivors who are reported have to decide about investigations before they’re ready. (And are pressured to refuse them.)

3. A small group of survivors will be forced into investigations they don’t want. That loss of agency is deeply retraumatizing. And our schools’ failure to protect survivors during investigations can place them in dangerous situations—including the risk of retaliatory violence.

The reality is that survivors who are reported are forced to enter a system designed to silence them and protect their perpetrator. Professors need to be clear-minded about what they’re doing when they comply with mandatory reporting.

🤣Narrative Magazine wants you to submit your six-word-story...and pay them $15 to read it!! 🤣I'm not a mathy math person...but I'm pretty sure that translates to no-fucking-way-cents per word.
