Sadly, Breeding Bird Surveys 2023 report showed UK wide declines for aerial insectivores with Swift down 66% since 1995. BTO have looked into understanding the drivers of Swift decline, focusing on weather & aphid availability. Read the science ➡️ bit.ly/3VPm6ao #SwiftAwarenessWeek

Salisbury Plain CES9 today. 181 birds processed with the 1st big warbler movement of the summer - 36 Sedge inc a control, 16 Reed, 6 Grasshopper, 9 Garden, 15 Willow, 16 Whitethroat, 27 Blackcap, 24 Chiffchaff plus Redstart, 5 Whinchat, 2 Stonechat #birdringing

Bonus Salisbury Plain session today with limited nets. 105 birds processed with big numbers of Sedge (39 ringed plus control) & Reed (23 ringed) making up most of the catch. Also the 1st Tree Pipit of the year, Lesser Whitethroat & 6 Garden Warbler, 9 Willow Warbler #birdringing

Over the last two evenings we have ringed over 100 Swallows at roost. We also had the amazing surprise of a Hoopoe, an uncommon visitor from Europe. The Swallow ringed elsewhere, 3 Sand Martins and a Yellow Wagtail were somewhat overshadowed!

It's fair to say that this has been rather a spectacular week! I was ringing in some long grass this morning and this Wryneck turned up! The backing cast was great with 8 Grasshopper Warblers, 5 Whinchat, 2 Stonechat and 53 Sedge Warblers.

Quiet morning at Salisbury Plain with just 117 birds processed when 300 would be expected due to torrential overnight rain N of us & thick fog at the ringing site. Still managed 3 Sedge, Reed, Grasshopper, Garden Warbler's & 2 Whitethroat, 71 Blackcap, 19 Chiffchaff #birdringing

Busy Salisbury Plain morning with 282 birds processed. The catch was dominated by 67 Chiffchaff & 191 Blackcap with this species now passing 30,000 on my rings. Also some variety with Whinchat, Tree Pipit, Whitethroat, 2 Garden & 5 Sedge Warbler #birdringing #migration

Huge push of migrants through the Salisbury Plain yesterday. We ringed 394 birds of 18 species including 239 Blackcaps, 51 Meadow Pipits, 42 Chiffchaffs, 12 Grasshopper Warblers, 3 Whinchats, this lovely Kestrel and the subtle beauty that is a Garden Warbler.

Only 2 of us for Salisbury Plain this morning so the number of nets was dialled right down. Still managed 151 birds inc. 3 Grasshopper Warbler, 2 Whitethroat & another Tree Pipit. Catch largely made up of 89 Blackcap & 45 Chiffchaff #birdringing #Migration
