The new police uniforms look nice. But I have a question. The last two policemen in this party have scarves covering their heads and faces. Is that part of the standard issue new uniform, too? 🤨 [Aug 10, 4:37, Shortwood Rd] Dennis M Brooks Jamaica Constabulary Force

This is going to help. Financial incentives do motivate some. So, good move. However, long term, if the conditions that nurture and support gangs are not dismantled, then new guns, members, and gangs will replace the ones removed. (See CAPRI's report: capricaribbean.org/document/groun…)

A waste of time and effort. Prices rise whenever there's a shortage, whatever the circumstances and cause. It's a naturally-occuring social law no different from the natural laws. Efforts to squash it either fail or make matters worse.

Consider, also, that at the very time when farmers have less to sell, getting a higher price for it is just compensation. Why would it be fair to take that away?

You'd think Beryl was the first hurricane to ever hit Jamaica in the hundred years that JPS has been in existence. There have actually been 29 hurricanes during that time. Unno wasn't taking notes?

Economists around the world who care for Jamaica exhale with relief at this correction since both theory and global experience demonstrate that extractable resources are a political risk and of questionable economic benefit. See: Nigeria, Venezuela, Mexico, Libya, Russia.

Nigel Clarke's appointment as IMF Deputy MD, as someone more qualified than most of its MDs, highlights that he cannot be promoted to the top job. US & EU divy up the IMF & World Bank between them alone. How does the world continue to accept this egregious job reservation scheme?

Damien King (@damienwking) 's Twitter Profile Photo

That was not my point. But if he was, he would only be following what every single IMF and World Bank head in history had done -- be parachuted in by the US and the EU.

Disbelieving official statistics is popular (and annoying) everywhere. Just heard the best response to it by my colleague, Alvin Wint. "Every statistic from a statistical agency is wrong, because it's an estimate; but the estimate is based on the best information that exists."

My Citibank account was just blocked by their Know-your-customer department. I have been a customer for half a century. How long exactly does it take to know a guy? (And isn't this evidence that KYC requirements have gotten ridiculous?)

Oh yes, because, since the time when the previous ID expired, he might have morphed into a completely different person. They have to check on that. 🙄

Oy, genius. Your passport and visa, or work ID, operate as permissions to access something or somewhere, which can expire. But we're not talking about permission; we are talking about it identifying who the truck you are, which is unchanging.

Oh, goody. Just in time, too. My biggest worry in life was that the khakis and oxfords (perfectly practical for a tropical country), that I've been wearing for the past few decades, would not be aligned with the fashion trends for this October.

The Gleaner really ought to be more careful with its photographic juxtaposition. Either that or the Minister's son has actually been expelled. But he doesn't look unusually distraught; that is how he always looks.
