This is not a field for people who are not keen on with working with people. Yes, it's important to be a good scientist, but being in this space is often just as much about diplomacy, tact, and people skills, which we're not taught in school. Build your "soft skills". Hard.

That being said, I think the biggest skillset to build if you're interested in coexistence work is empathy and patience. People will not agree with you. They may not share your values. One of the most humbling things you'll learn is your viewpoint isn't objectively the right one.

Just a reminder to folks that I'll be transitioning largely over to Instagram @bescicurious soon, as Twitter continues to be less of an active platform. This account will still exist, but for more active scicomm, or to connect with me, please check me out there!

New neighbors unlocked ๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽ‰ Saw this group of giraffes (technically, a "tower") standing near the roadside on one of the game farms while going to a farm visit this morning in Ghanzi District, Kalahari, Botswana

When I received 2 scholarships back in April, the first thing I thought was โ€œDid I receive these because I check a diversity box?โ€ which was really crappy

Isnโ€™t pursuing a PhD supposed to be a time to learn how to be a researcher? It seems at time (at least on Twitter) folks want aspiring PhD students to be fully formed researchers. Thatโ€™s not how that works.

New interview up! I've slowed down on the interview circuit in 2023 because I've been pretty snowed under trying to hit my PhD landmarks but super proud to talk human-wildlife conflict mitigation in Sub-Saharan Africa with K9 Podcasts! podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/k9-โ€ฆ #ScienceTwitter

International field biologists who have flown with rechargeable batteries for camera traps - please connect with me! Trying to figure out how best to get a bunch of camera batteries to Botswana and which kind of rechargeable batteries to purchase.

Super excited to have written a profile of the awe-inspiring Gabi Fleury (they/them) ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ท ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ด ๐Ÿ† for Rotary International Magazine.
