People have been told that public sector pay is growing fast, and is out of control. In fact, public sector pay on average hasn't recovered from the COVID cost of living crisis. That's mainly because of the 2021 Workforce Policy Statement, where pay was held for many.

The wage bill for government hasn't grown significantly for a long time - its actually grown in line with the economy. According to Treasury data, public service pay as a % of GDP has been the same since 2002. Even with COVID, Cyclones, Earthquakes, and everything else
