#JTRACKs first regular weekday online morning meeting w/land kicked off on 9 Sept. LWD (logging while drilling) training & live broadcast with the #GeologicalSociety. Preparations are underway to deploy the temperature observatory. #IODP #JAMSTEC #JTRACK

On 10 Sept, we found the original borehole from #JFAST 12 years ago. The 7km long drillpipe, even affected by the #KuroshioCurrent & deflected by several tens of meters, was able to find the borehole. Next, we'll install the new temperature observatory! #IODP #JAMSTEC #JTRACK

#Chikyu keeps working 24 hrs, even on the weekend. On 9/14,  LWD tool & underwater TV (UWTV)  reached near the seafloor, preparing to survey the LWD. Co-chief & drilling team verified the drill sites for LWD & coring, and the sedimentologists discussed possible lithologies.

On Sunday, 15 Sept, #Chikyu started drilling & entered the logging-while-drilling (LWD) phase at Site C0019. Scientists are getting trained on paleomagnetism & reviewing methods for recording geological structures. They also conducted their weekly #SafetyDrill. #IODP #JTRACK

On Monday, 16 Sept, #Chikyu lowered the LWD bottom hole assembly (BHA) while running equipment function tests. In the #Lab, veteran scientists  mentor early-career scientists as they practice analyses. These early-career scientists will gain priceless field experience aboard.✨

At 2000 h on 7 Sept, #Chikyu arrived safely at Site C0019. The #KuroshioCurrent pushed Chikyu along faster than expected. During the transit, the crew & researchers held meetings on board to discuss the goals & operations for #JTRACK. #IODP #JAMSTEC #ScientificDrilling
