My favorite genre of tweet tonight: people who think they’re seeing the aurora in NYC but in fact are just seeing the lights from the Kosciuszko Bridge reflected in the clouds

Wow -- skies cleared just enough that we had ONE lucky follower who saw and photographed the northern lights IN DC around 445a today. And was visible with naked eye. Anyone else???

When you spend last night *inside* writing about auroras around the country and your friends actually GO OUT AND SEE IT NEAR YOU because of your reporting. My story from last night where I lived through everyone's amazing pictures: washingtonpost.com/weather/2024/0…

What an incredible 24 hours in the space weather world - and counting ☀️🌏 Friday's activity was the kind you tell stories about. NOAA forecasts show Sat may not be as intense as last night's, but Sunday's could be! My story with continued updates: washingtonpost.com/weather/2024/0…

Another chance for northern lights Sunday! More solar eruptions are heading toward us for potentially another severe to extreme geomagnetic storm. This is our best chance for an intense aurora before this round of solar activity diminishes Tues. More ⤵️washingtonpost.com/weather/2024/0…

Still raving about the auroras Friday. Reported in all 50 states + rare places like India & Bahamas. But how rare was it? When might it hit again? Scientists say it's a 1-in-20 year storm, but we may not have to wait 20 more years for another. More ⤵️ washingtonpost.com/weather/2024/0…

A group of us from CWG (Matthew Cappucci Kasha Patel, Jeff Halverson and @jsamenow) saw a screening of Twisters tonight! We’ll have more coverage and share thoughts on this in the coming days. But general impression was 👍

Two things are true this week: 1) Meteorologists who have seen early screenings of Twisters really like it 2) Meteorologists love this commercial which pokes fun at weather geeks youtube.com/watch?v=r9Mgbe…

Last night was magic in Oklahoma. A meteor shower peak, strong storms, with a rare appearance from the northern lights. This is a six-image stack with the best meteors from 20 mins around the base image of a storm and aurora. Well worth the 45 minutes of panic to get located

I'm not one to hype up aurora viewing around the DMV, but I was optimistic after reporting this article. From a numbers perspective, I feel confident that we'll be seeing more strong geomagnetic activity that may bring the lights down here - until 2027!

Check out today's The Washington Post! Beautiful layout of my story on sprites, fleeting red flashes above thunderstorms. One of my fav stories I've written 🎆 Thanks Paul M Smith, Oscar van der Velde, Burcu Kosar, Ph.D., & more who taught me sprite 101! Read it here: wapo.st/3Mb7gGG

#Glaciers as seen from beneath are just fascinating! So blue! 🤩 This beautiful but fleeting place visited today is only here though because of rapid glacier retreat, leaving the water-carved channels dry.

Scientists solved a new seismic mystery: a strange underground rumble that lasted 9 days. I go over the explanation in my article: wapo.st/3XIak3M But here's also the tldr; 60-sec video version:
