This beast of a beetle (reaching up to 17.7cm) is native to South American rainforests and actually spends up to the first 10 years of its life as a larvae, eating soft wood under tree bark. It will only live as an adult for a few months.

We first opened our doors in 1860, but the Museum is more than meets the eye. In addition to the specimens that are on display in the main court, the Museum is actually in care of more than 7,000,000 specimens total.

We have enjoyed hosting an array of interns here at the Museum this summer. Undergraduate students have the opportunity to apply to work on a variety of research and public engagement projects across the Museum. See what intern Zoe gets up to in a day at the Museum!

For the last few summers we have had interns working on digitising our glass lantern slides, once used for teaching. These glass slides would have been used in a lanternslide projector. This slide features a fossilised brittle sea star.
