If you notice your patient has developed a few urticarial welts during surgery, would you refer them to an allergy clinic for evaluation? (This is not referring to the urticaria commonly seen tracking along the cannula site)

Interested in penicillin allergy delabelling in the NHS? independent.co.uk/news/science/p… In the SPACE study journalofinfection.com/action/showPdf…, we learnt a huge amount about how delabelling can be routinely delivered by non-allergists in the hospital setting. 1/2

The UK Perioperative Allergy Network PerioperativeAllergyNetworkUK is supporting the delabelling of surgical patients through education and training. With an estimated 900,000 patients waiting for surgery who are labelled as penicillin allergic, this is a key group to focus on

The SPACEstudy found surgical patients the most accessible for delabelling - with the immediate benefit of being able to have penicillin antibiotics during their planned surgery. #AntimicrobialStewardship

Please follow the link below to support Tanya. She is running to raise money for Anaphylaxis UK, for much needed research and to help raise awareness about perioperative allergy. We can and must do more to find out how to prevent tragedies like this.

About 95% of patients with penicillin allergies are actually not allergic to it. Being given alternative antibiotics is harmful: higher incidence of wound infection and multi resistant bacterial infections. So it’s not necessarily better for our patient with an unconvincing
