1/17 It was very difficult to take a stand against the #CatholicChurch in 1940’s Ireland but that is what the people of #Listowel in Co Kerry did. Canon Brennan refused to allow the burial of a respected member of the community in consecrated ground. Peggy McCarthy did nothing

RIP #SvenGoranEriksson Always seemed like a decent man. And whilst not wishing to be tribal, listening to the deserved tributes for Sven today is in stark contrast to the way the FA utterly failed to honour former England manager Don Revie when he died of MND. #lufc

Watching an old episode of Bullseye. Jim has just said “well, it’s £210. I know that’s a lot of money for a young couple just starting out & looking to get wed”. The woman said “yeah but we’re brother and sister”.

Great thread. Couldn’t agree more. HEIs provide social work education, not training. Once educated, social workers are ready to practice, not practice-ready. Vital differences.

Training is telling, education is learning. Schein said telling betrays three kinds of arrogance. 1. that you think you know more than the person you’re telling. 2. your knowledge is the correct knowledge. 3 that you have the right to structure other people’s experience for them

A brilliant The Square Ball podcast this week with Micky P Kerr A stark realisation of how far football has been taken away from the working classes, and crucially, how football can be reclaimed. #lufc

One-word Ofsted grades for schools to be scrapped. This is good news. Really hope to see CQC do similar. Health & social care provision is far too important and nuanced to be reduced to a single word outcome. bbc.com/news/articles/…

As school begins in England, periodic reminder that schools which choose to reward 100% attendance without equally rewarding disabled children who cannot achieve this for disability related reasons may well be breaching the Equality Act and the Human Rights Act

I recognise this. The coordination of my sister’s support became a very complex, stressful and exhausting full-time job for my dad. All unpaid and unrecognised.

Each and every one of us with a platform has a responsibility to correct others on the truth about asylum seekers claiming benefits and free homes. They can’t. They receive just £49 a week or £9 if given food. Only if and when they get refugee status can they claim or get a job.

Organisations that talk about AI in social work aren’t really interested in helping people. It’s a mask for filtering, denying, sifting out, redirecting, referring on and ultimately avoiding the human contact that they are funded to provide.

Leaders are often promoted into positions without essential people skills. They may have longevity, strategic thinking, the right connections but they never say “how are you really doing?” “thank you for everything you’ve done” or “I’m sorry I got that wrong” Leadership is this.

First email today and a real reminder for me of just how fabulous foster carers, adoptive parents & wider families & friends are. All those who are not the birth parents but who show unconditional love & support to our children - a massive, massive thank you
