In a time where more extremists, with their black-&-white answers to everything, are being elected around the world, it's heartening to see Keir Starmer's team swept to power in the UK. They face a huge task. (Elmo & the Raving Loony Party candidate were magnanimous is defeat).

We might look at the US with despair, but we can look at the British recently & learn what can keep democracy healthy. Things like viewing elected roles as the privilege to serve, treating one's political opponents with respect, & looking for common ground when possible #auspol

This is a welcome message from Jacinta Allan regarding Victorian hospital funding. The nature of the cuts being proposed out of Treasury to date would endanger too many to be allowed to be imposed. #springst theage.com.au/politics/victo…

It's easy to say there is no place for political violence, but the poisonous mix of a rabid gun culture & extremism make it inevitable. Here in Australia, we ALL have an urgent responsibility to isolate the demagogues at both extreme ends of the spectrum, & seek common ground.

90 dead. Refugees in tents, in a so-called "safe zone". This is barbarism. This is utterly unjustifiable. This is criminal. #Netanyahu & his allies have squandered the goodwill of the world community. His apologists are blind to the fact they are simply perpetuating hatred.

In this regard, the British are setting an example we should all aspire to. Disagreement shouldn't require disrespect, opposition doesn't require animosity, and common ground actually is in everyone's interests. #auspol

The Israeli parliament's overwhelming vote against a two-state solution slams shut for now the door for Palestinian hope, shows contempt for the world community, & deserves stronger Australian condemnation. It is time for Israel to face sanctions. #auspol timesofisrael.com/knesset-votes-…

One of the greatest traits a leader can display is to accept painful advice, to put those they lead ahead of him/herself. Most "leaders" are dragged kicking & screaming out the door. Can you imagine Donald Trump making way for a better candidate?

Australia lost one of our medical legends yesterday, with the death of Nobel Laureate Dr Robin Warren. Together with Dr Barry Marshall, they discovered the link between the bacteria Helicobacter Pylori & Peptic Ulcer Disease. It fundamentally changed how we treat ulcer disease.

Like much of the civilised world, I am disgusted & horrified by atrocity after atrocity perpetrated by the Israeli forces. They have destroyed the goodwill that followed the October murders. They have become a rogue state, & deserve to be treated as such. theage.com.au/world/middle-e…

I'll definitely be encouraging my kids and trainees to watch this interview. #JemimaMontag, thank you for setting such a wonderful example.

Australia has a proud record of welcoming refugees from war - Vietnam, East Timor, Bosnia to name a few. A sad day when a blanket ban is demanded by Peter Dutton - tarring so many with one brush, rejecting the security processes he once oversaw #auspol abc.net.au/news/2024-08-1…

Practising medicine demands ethical behaviour, personal integrity & expertise. The patient comes first. The allegations against 2 doctors in the #MatthewPerry case are, if proven, a horrific & disgraceful betrayal of trust. abc.net.au/news/2024-08-1…

I've known Bill Shorten for decades. The public person & the private friend are one & the same - loyal, thoughtful and principled. That wicked sense of humour. Take note of the way he picked himself up after 2019, and turned adversity to strength. theage.com.au/politics/feder…
