Even in freezing temperatures it's amazing what you will find if you look close enough... Here are our team and volunteers surveying the Milton Burn, near Aviemore. Just check out the incredible photograph of a couple of Mayfly, expertly captured by Colin Mclennan.๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ‘

Redd counts within the Spey Catchment Initiative Initiatives Upper Spey River Restoration Project show a small increase in redds along this stretch, from 2 last year to 6 this year. Let's hope this trend continues as this habitat continues to improve for both spawning and juvenile salmon.

Great news! Our Upper Spey River Restoration Project is already helping Atlantic Salmon spawn.๐Ÿฅณ The gravel deposits that form below these structures are often perfect for spawning salmon in the winter & the pools above for keeping juvenile salmon cool in the summer.๐Ÿ˜

It was a freezing -14C last night in Dalwhinnie. The Met Office reports that this marks the coldest January night in Britain since 2019! And it looks like the mercury is set to plummet again tonight.๐ŸŒก๏ธ๐Ÿฅถ We're sending warm wishes to everyone braving the chill on Speyside!

Our River Calder restoration project was completed in 2021. Fast forward 3 years, and this is what it looks likeโ€ฆ Thanks to large deer-fenced enclosures in an area that was devoid of river-side trees, there is now a large amount of natural woodland regeneration. #speycatchment

Check out all these beautiful stoneflies! This is what we love to see.๐Ÿ˜Š Well done to our volunteers, who are so keen that they have started doing extra invertebrate surveys, in this case on a burn on the outskirts of Aviemore.๐Ÿ‘ And thanks, as always, to BuglifeScotland๐Ÿฅฐ

Yesterday, we joined forces with key public sector orgs to discuss public land management collaboration around the lower Speyside. Helping public sector orgs to better work together is critcial to meet biodiversity & climate challenges.๐Ÿ˜ Thanks @NaturePositive_ for organising!

A shout-out to our neighbours, the Findhorn Watershed Initiative (Findhorn Watershed Initiative) We recently toured their upper catchment south of Inverness, exploring their visionary projects. The highlight? Over 40,000 new Scots pine and native broadleafs set to transform this valley.๐ŸŒณ

What an incredible day and an incredibly inspiring view.๐Ÿ˜ This special area is one of our favourite parts of the catchment and shows the huge impact that land management decisions can have on the size and rate of nature recovery. Inspiring. โ˜บ๏ธ #speycatchment #naturerecovery

Progress....๐Ÿ˜ ๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŒฒ When visiting one of our project sites (this is our River Calder restoration project), there's nothing more exciting than seeing nature starting to rebound, new growth, and the landscape springing back into life. speycatchment.org

Incredible!๐Ÿ˜ During a recent walk along the Upper Spey, we were fortunate to witness a dragonfly in its rare and fragile transitional stage from nymph to adult. ๐Ÿ› To say we felt lucky to witness this rare event is an understatement. ๐Ÿฆ‹๐Ÿ™Œ

What was once a featureless stretch of river, uniform and no more than knee deep, now has extremely deep pools around nearly all of the 80+ large wood structures. โ„๏ธ๐ŸŸ These pools will provide a cool, lifesaving refuge for juvenile Atlantic salmon from summer heatwaves.๐ŸŒž
