Alert: A red flag warning is goes into effect this evening. Due to increased fire danger campfires are banned in the park campground until further notice. Propane stoves are ok. On Thursday 9/30, Goodspeed, Brushy Peaks and High Ridge Trails will be closed.

Early morning on October 8th, campground staff relocated a deceased buck to a remote section of the park. Park staff set up a motion activated trail camera next to the carcass overnight.

Wow! Look at that mushroom! While beautiful and striking to the eye, this species, Amanita muscaria, is extremely poisonous. Please remember that collecting anything in the Park is illegal and that these beautiful fungi are dangerous and best left undisturbed.

Goodspeed trail is open again! Thanks to our trail patrol volunteers, Tony from SEC Education, Intern Chris Kam, and Francis from Park Maintenance, who found and cleared over 10 trees that were blown over during the high winds of last weekend.

Wind update for Sugarloaf Ridge State Park. High winds are forecast for Tues. - Thur. (2/1-2/3). As a precaution, we are closing Goodspeed Trail. In the campground, open fires are banned starting Tuesday. Be careful and please report any down trees to park staff.

Sugarloaf Ridge State Park is full of wildlife, like this Black-tailed Jackrabbit photographed by park visitor John Hibbard. Herbivores like deer and rabbits tend to hang out in the campground because big carnivores like bears and mountain lions avoid the areas people frequent.

Found on the wall of our visitor center this Checkered Beetle (Enoclerus eximius) is a predator of smaller insects. Its bright colors may indicate that it is poisonous to birds and other visual predators!
