People with an incarcerated or formerly incarcerated family member have a 2.6 years shorter life expectancy than those with no incarcerated family members. Mass incarceration has created a public health crisis across the country. prisonpolicy.org/blog/2021/07/1…

Sadly, formerly incarcerated people are 10x more likely to be homeless than the general public. This makes them more likely to be arrested & incarcerated again, thanks to policies & directives like THIS that criminalize homelessness.

The troubling truth is that at least 4.9 million people are jailed each year – and more than a quarter of them are jailed multiple times. Does the system really expect us to believe that they’re “reforming” people?

Not to mention that the prison healthcare system operates as a business. Healthcare is so often contracted to corporations that place more value over their profits than those in their care, which leads to abysmal “care” offered to those who desperately need it.

I hope you talk about the impact that increasing accessibility of communication for incarcerated people, by way of free calls, has on officer safety. Here’s a round up of past independent research to get you started.

“We are addicted to carceral solutions” - Texas Jail Project hit the nail on the head there. Texas is eager to ship incarcerated people off to different states/counties – but it's costly, and worse: It's extremely demanding on loved ones who have to travel great distances for visits

The devastating, senseless, maddening details in this story: her family called and said we don’t want cops, they were told cops have to come with mental health workers, family says ok never mind we don’t want help, cops come and shoot Victoria immediately in front of them.

Closing #MensCentralJail and replacing it with a new jail will not make Los Angeles safer. Better solutions exist. LA County can reduce its jail population, save lives, and build public safety by investing in community-based alternatives to incarceration. latimes.com/opinion/story/…

Law enforcement don’t prevent crime - they respond to it afterwards, when it's too late to address the root cause. Programs like alternative crisis responder teams actually resolve issues in our community. Go to bit.ly/CSBToolkit to support the Community Safety Budget!

Harris county chooses to transfer more pretrial detainees out of state, and OUT OF REACH of regulatory oversight by Tx Comm Jail Stand This is a clear message to families that the county does not care about the safety of their loved ones who are pretrial. houstonpublicmedia.org/articles/news/…
