🚨NEW: #HurricaneBeryl is expected to make landfall today; USAID has activated disaster experts across the Caribbean. Additionally, our prepositioned supplies in Barbados, Grenada, St. Vincent, St. Lucia, Jamaica & Haiti help us move resources quickly to save lives if needed.

#HurricaneBeryl, the earliest Atlantic Cat. 5 on record, is on track to potentially impact Jamaica on Wednesday. USAID has deployed staff to Jamaica, activated our disaster consultants in the country, and prepositioned supplies there and in other locations in the region.

The storm already made landfall in Grenada’s Carriacou Island Monday morning, causing damage across the Windward Islands, including in Grenada, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Barbados (pictured), and Trinidad and Tobago. USAID is prepared to respond if requested.

As #HurricaneBeryl crosses the Caribbean toward Jamaica, its wind speed is getting a lot of attention. But other hurricane hazards, like flooding & storm surge, can be more dangerous. Our USAID teams are ready to respond if needed. We prepare all year for storms like this.

In Sudan, USAID partners are preparing to scale up assistance into El Fasher, but a ceasefire is needed to ensure safe passage. SAF and RSF must return to the negotiating table, agree to a ceasefire, and facilitate humanitarian access.

On #WorldHumanitarianDay, the courage of aid workers facing rising dangers is top of mind. I’m proud USAID is the #1 donor in support of humanitarian safety & security, but more than that, that we support the universal respect & prioritization of the protection of aid workers.

Update in Sudan: USAID partners began transporting food and health supplies to Darfur via the newly reopened Adre border crossing. The opening of Adre for aid is critical to combating famine. We call on SAF and RSF to allow passage of assistance without restrictions.

No one knows the issues impacting a community better than the people who live in it. That’s why I’m so proud of our new Locally Led Humanitarian Assistance Policy, and so grateful for the tremendous work of our staff, partners, and others in bringing this policy to the table.

I’m here in South Sudan to meet with our dedicated humanitarian partners and USAID staff, and to see, first-hand, our life-saving assistance as we work to reach millions of people this year. The needs here remain staggering, but we’re committed to helping the most vulnerable.

Here at this health center in South Sudan, I was honored to speak with these women, who have directly benefited from the life-saving nutrition assistance provided by USAID's Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance partners World Food Programme and UNICEF for pregnant and breastfeeding women and their children.

This World Food Programme warehouse helps prepare food assistance to be delivered via airdrop to particularly hard-to-reach areas of South Sudan. USAID's support for facilities like the one you see here helps some of the most vulnerable people in the country, but it's clear more must be done.

I couldn’t be more proud of the USAID's Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance team of South Sudanese staff who are the backbone of our work in the country. Their expertise, professionalism, and commitment to serving the people of South Sudan has allowed assistance to reach those who need it the most.

This and every 9/11, we remember the 2,977 lives lost in New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia, and we honor the first responders that bravely rushed toward the danger to help others. I continue to hold the families and the loved ones of those lost close in my heart.
