Every year in Metro Vancouver, car crashes kill 100 people. We could get to zero if governments designed transportation systems to put safety first.

112 km/h in a school zone. Horrific. What's worse? The VPD caught 22 more drivers going at least 70 km/h in a school zone. 70 km/h is certain death for any unluckily pedestrian. Putting a school on a freeway does not change the fact that it is a freeway.

Reminder: This is happening in every school zone in Vancouver every minute of every school day and it’s why we need automated enforcement, not sporadic blitzes from cops who should be dealing with more pressing policing issues. Too bad ABC Vancouver wants “studies” instead.

Remember, Sim had the chance to ask the province for more automated cameras, and he opted for more studies instead. Here is yet more data about the reckless speeds on our streets, endangering our kids. Mayor Ken Sim campaigned on making our city safe - does he mean it?

Great to see motor vehicles excluded from the Sea to Sky Highway for the day so that Mayor Ken Sim & my husband & 15 year old kid could cycle the GranFondo safely!

Of course 20mph limits will be set where some drivers think the "aren't needed". That's why we have speed limits and they are set for the good of society as a whole rather than the preferences of individual drivers.

The problem is that Vancouver drivers know that there is an infinitesimal chance of getting caught disobeying the rules so they can do whatever they want with impunity. Automated enforcement is a large part of the solution.

The fact that cycling levels in Vancouver are the same as they were 9 years ago shows that we've stopped even trying to make progress on making streets safer.

If you’d like to see the City of Burnaby do more to uphold the safety of people walking and rolling in the Edmonds neighbourhood, let them know! burnaby.ca/edmondstraffic

At Car Free Day last Saturday we heard this sentiment again & again. So many people who want to try cycling, who want to reduce car use and get more exercise and save gas money, but are too afraid to be on our roads (and who can blame them). What a huge shame.
