MMT always seems more interested in winning on social media and liberal arts schools than actually changing policy, and this is a great example

One of the most ridiculous-yet oddly fitting-aspects of the Bernstein clip is that the right wing swarm reposting the clip that MMTers promoted took it to be a takedown of MMT.

This whole affair was a match made in heaven where idiocy was rewarded with idiocy.

What makes this situation especially funny/galling is that Jared’s *whole thing* (not to take anything away from him) is that he has a clear, coherent, and compelling understanding of how the economy works (or not) for workers

Aside from the fact that the clip is quite obviously edited, it’s also just ludicrous to pretend Jared isn’t extremely smart.

I worked w/ Jared Bernstein closely for 3 years at CEA. We discussed fiscal policy & financing often. His views are well-known, well-articulated, & public. This gotcha clip circulating is deceptively framed: the interview was done back in Feb 2020: pre-CEA, pre-Biden, & pre-pandemic

We spent 2/3 of the last 6 years and 1/2 of the last 8 years under 4% unemployment rate.

This has *never* happened since the BLS started collecting unemployment data.

We've never had 6, 7, or 8 year stretches with as many months under 4% unemployment rate as we do today.

Here is some hope at a time of division. This conversation with Jewish and Arab students at UW–Madison left me inspired. We need to have nuanced and honest conversations like this in every community and college across the country.
