My class’ final exam is in one of those rare classrooms that still has a chalk board! Which is awesome! Predictably, it’s also in the math department building - it’s like walking into a Time Machine!

I agree with this.

However, we will need a robust & continuous demonstration that new CCS projects hit performance benchmarks (e.g., capture rates) as a condition of future support.

Otherwise, policy support will quickly become policy boondoggles. E.g., Ethanol subsidies.

'Administrators have spent much of recent past recruiting social-justice-minded students & faculty to their campuses under implicit...promise that activism is not just welcome but encouraged. Now leaders of those universities are shocked to find their charges & employees believed…

Very much looking forward to this. The world's climate trajectory will be determined by the developmental trajectories of Global South nations, and India's energy transition story is something you don't want to miss.

I wrote about the crackdown on campus protests.

Universities like Columbia, Cornell and Emory trade on Vietnam Era protests to market themselves to student activists. Protest is part of their brand and sales pitch. Now they're punishing students for taking them at their word. 🧵

I don't agree with some of the slogans I see on posters at the encampment of Stanford University students on our campus. But as long as these students stay peaceful & don't threaten anyone, I'm fine with them living in tents for the rest of the year. (As a Montana kid, I liked camping…

This is going to be one of the biggest stories of the next decade!

Gulf states are making a major play to capture key segments of the critical minerals supply chain! And they move fast!

Mining investments could soon compete in volume with O&G investments.

climate advocates are sharing a story about this plant's 'failure to capture 90% of emissions'
what's missing?

1) EPA permits are just for~1/4 of its emissions
2) emissions high b/c there's a 335MW coal plant on site; the current CO2 capture is on the ethanol fermentation part

I agree with this statement.

It is no secret that I've called out oil and gas industry groups when they mislead the public with selective interpretation of research results. However, that standard should also apply to organizations that want to see strong climate action.

I've covered campus activism since the late 90s. Nothing that's happening on campuses now -- sit ins, building takeovers, encampments -- is at all outside the standard vernacular of student protest.

What's unusual is administrators calling in riot cops on their own students

Wrapped up my last class of the semester! I keep reminding myself what a privilege it is to teach such smart, funny, and compassionate students, despite all the pressures they’re under.

Don’t ever believe commentary from people who haven’t stepped into a classroom in decades.

I’m sure some folks will hate me for saying this, but Texas gets a lot right.

- It is easy to build housing, it’s not taxed to an extreme level

- Small permitting bureaucracy has made it a renewable energy leader

- Property taxes are high, income taxes low, which is best!

Good news on permitting reform!

The Department of Energy is giving a categorical exclusion from NEPA environmental review to:

- transmission projects that use existing rights of way

- solar projects on disturbed lands

- energy storage projects on disturbed lands

The GHG impacts of exported LNG vary significantly depending on where the methane comes from, and where it goes. But the US govt has no control over contracts or what the gas is used for once it leaves.

The chilling show of force at the University of Texas at Austin is a disproportionate response to an apparently peaceful protest. Sending in a phalanx of law enforcement threatens protected speech where it should be at its most free: a public university like UT Austin.…

This is just being sour grapes. Every top researcher I know have had at least one paper desk rejected at Science or Nature. That doesn't make the journal bad.

Key is the audience & their expectation for these broad interest journals, not what is cool in *your narrow field*.

Important finding. 50% variation in GHG intensity of LNG produced in different basins. Generic emissions estimates don’t work for the US.
