Data equals power. When Shumani Luruli of Planact South Africa partnered with our Asivikelane campaign, she realized the best way to grab South African officials’ attention was by collecting data directly from informal residents they served. Today, residents collect data on service gaps

It's day 2 of our partner convening and we're looking at how to build the #Asivikelane hubs and critical tools for collaboration and advocacy. Today we will discuss: ✅ What are the key elements that make a hub ✅ What have we learnt so far ✅ What are we doing well in the hubs

How do we get other stakeholders, like businesses, to join #Asivikelane and help to improve basic services to informal settlements? This is our topic for the day!

Residents in Scenery Park helped their community by fixing this broken tap. Communal taps are used by many households and can break often, leaving residents without water. Training residents to fix their own communal services ensures that services are fixed quickly. Buffalo City Metro Municipality

By understanding budgets, gathering data & collaborating with government, #Asivikelane Community Facilitator Samke Phewe ensures residents in informal settlements receive drinking water & functioning toilets. Watch our video to find out how she levers her knowledge to improve

Residents in City of Joburg were excited to see new toilets delivered. When there are not enough toilets residents are forced to walk long distances to reach toilets. This effects women in particular, as it can be dangerous for women, especially at night. @planact_ngo 1to1AgncyofEngagemnt

#Asivikelane and St james Apostolic faith mission are working with Mangaung_Metro to achieve dignified sanitation. It is important to involve residents in decision-making and we hope that by working together we can ensure that the community receives the sanitation solutions that they need.

Behind the scenes a few minutes ago. We were LIVE on Newzroom Afrika speaking about the state of service delivery in CITY OF EKURHULENI based on the MFMA report findings by Auditor-General South Africa. Link to interview follows...

[Watch:] Communal taps and toilets are used by many households on a daily basis. They therefore need regular repairs and maintenance to ensure informal settlement residents have access to these vital services. #Asivikelane

Exactly a week ago I spoke at a convening of Asivikelane reflecting on the work over the years and the realities today. I spoke in particular about Sinoxolo Mafevuka, whose life was stolen from her when she was rapes and murdered in communal toilet 200 metres away from her home

Axolile Notywala (@axolilenotywala) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Very little to nothing has changed in Cape Town. The informal settlement community, SST Section, where Sinoxolo was raped and murdered still has no dignified and safe toilets, 8 years later. How many more must die and for how long?

We can’t continue with business as usual in Cape Town. I am ready to work with as many people and communities who are ready and willing to fight for what RIGHT and what’s JUST! Fighting we will have to do and we must, for the most basic of services, safety and dignity for

Some happy news received from residents. This dump site was cleared over a year ago and it is still clean thanks to the combined efforts of residents, #Asivikelane Community Facilitators Planact South Africa, 1to1AgncyofEngagemnt and City of Joburg. Working together to yeild results!
