#Asivikelane Sharing the building blocks of our #TshwaneHub strategy to manage #solidwaste in informal settlements. 📝This month, we presented our strategy to the Environmental department City of Tshwane. We hope it will form part of the policy for sustainable waste management.
Data equals power. When Shumani Luruli of Planact South Africa partnered with our Asivikelane campaign, she realized the best way to grab South African officials’ attention was by collecting data directly from informal residents they served. Today, residents collect data on service gaps

Residents in Scenery Park helped their community by fixing this broken tap. Communal taps are used by many households and can break often, leaving residents without water. Training residents to fix their own communal services ensures that services are fixed quickly. Buffalo City Metro Municipality
Advocating for clean water and dignified sanitation 🧵 Our Asivikelane campaign, active since 2020, empowers informal settlement residents to monitor and advocate for better sanitation services. 🚰💪
Residents in City of Joburg were excited to see new toilets delivered. When there are not enough toilets residents are forced to walk long distances to reach toilets. This effects women in particular, as it can be dangerous for women, especially at night. @planact_ngo 1to1AgncyofEngagemnt
#Asivikelane and St james Apostolic faith mission are working with Mangaung_Metro to achieve dignified sanitation. It is important to involve residents in decision-making and we hope that by working together we can ensure that the community receives the sanitation solutions that they need.

Exactly a week ago I spoke at a convening of Asivikelane reflecting on the work over the years and the realities today. I spoke in particular about Sinoxolo Mafevuka, whose life was stolen from her when she was rapes and murdered in communal toilet 200 metres away from her home
Some happy news received from residents. This dump site was cleared over a year ago and it is still clean thanks to the combined efforts of residents, #Asivikelane Community Facilitators Planact South Africa, 1to1AgncyofEngagemnt and City of Joburg. Working together to yeild results!
