On Macron & co: "rather than acting as a bulwark against the far right, the liberal elite has facilitated the process through which the far right has become a growing threat, and in doing so allowed reactionary politics to gain hold in the mainstream" onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.11…

Excellent day on “Collaboration of the Faculties: adventures in Interdisciplinarity” for the The British Academy Early Career Researcher Network. Lightning talk by Ed McKeon & Eun Sun Goodwin + fantastic sketches of the morning, incl. uprooting the colonial roots of disciplinarity!

But it really isn’t because it’s conceded the premise that public goods have to be economically productive. Once sector leaders accepted this framing, they assured they would preside over HE’s demise. Where are the sector leaders who will advocate for the social value of HE?

Naomi Waltham-Smith (@auralflaneur) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Good to value public sector workers. However, if this is what UUK thinks is the “full” impact, heaven help the entire sector. We need leaders who can advocate for the societal value of HE, not accept a reductive framing of university as job training.

From the superb Ernest Cole exhibition at The Photographers' Gallery, (1) instructive commentary on the Bantu Education Act showing why we should resist attempts to argue certain types of people don’t need to go to uni for the job they’ll do; (2) appalling inequality of educational conditions.

There isn’t a system in this country where taxpayers foot the bill for professors’ designer clothing😭 Is it just me who thinks she should at least have blown it on something better than Me+Em? Not declaring 💷 to fake looking like a woman of the people will do wonders for trust!

Naomi Waltham-Smith (@auralflaneur) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Just when I thought UUK couldn’t get any more ridiculous. They do understand they’ve overestimated their international markets, right? And it’s the duty of democratic watchdogs like unis to call out PMs for cosying up to fascists, not themselves pandering to far-right narratives.

🔴 Labour's Red Tightrope 🔴 Worth perhaps a doing a quick thread on the results in today's post (stuck on train!), which I think make the 'sandcastle' story about Labour's victory more complicated. Labour face risks but not where you might think. 1/n
