We strongly condemn the overnight arbitrary arrest and detention of Doug Coltart ✊🏼🇿🇼 and Tapiwa Muchineripi by Zimbabwe Republic Police on 4 September 2023, for defending an opposition elected councillor, Councillor Womberaiishe Nhende and Sonele Mukhuhlani, who were abducted and tortured over the weekend.

Authorities must ensure that lawyers are able to perform all of their functions without intimidation, hindrance, harassment or improper interference. Lawyers should not be identified with their clients or their clients' causes as a result of discharging their functions.

You can’t arrest lawyers every time you disagree with them. A lawyer worth his salt must upset you because the more they do so, the more they effectively represent their clients. The police cannot tell lawyers how to conduct themselves. It is as simple as that.
