On this day in 1305: William Wallace was executed. John de Menteith, a Scottish knight loyal to Edward, had turned Wallace over to English soldiers eighteen days earlier. Wallace was transported to London, where he was tried for treason and atrocities against civilians in war.

On this day in 1986: Highlander was released in the UK. It starred Christopher Lambert as Scotsman Connor MacLeod and Sean Connery as Egyptian/Spaniard Juan Sรกnchez Villa-Lobos Ramรญrez. Add an evil baddie, a bonkers script and great music from Queen, and you have a cult classic.

On this day in 1930: The people of St Kilda were evacuated from the remote island archipelago at their own request. The population had dwindled from 73 in 1920 to just 36 in 1930 and life was becoming untenable. It had been populated since the Bronze Age.

On this day in 1812 Scottish pedal-bicycle inventor Kirkpatrick Macmillan was born in Dumfriesshire. He rode his new, extremely heavy, invention 68 miles into Glasgow in June 1842 which took him two days. He also knocked over a wee girl in the Gorbals and was fined 5 shillings ๐Ÿ˜ฌ
