I don’t know what is going on the past two weeks, but I keep finding new or rare species in the waters around Nova Scotia! Yesterday I observed this Gonionemus sp. — the second observation in the province! Nothing thrills me as much as seeing a jelly I haven’t seen before!

Spent today at the beach and this cloud had me mesmerized. Team saw schools of fish, nudibranchs, rock gunnels, kelp, moon snails.

Over the years, the Bedford Institute of Oceanography has been a hot spot with tourists, interest groups and youth day camps. We are excited to say that BIO has reopened its doors to the public!

The CPAWS Nova Scotia team had a great first day of surveys in Newfoundland with Miawpukek First Nation. It’s a great privilege to have been invited here to explore these places with the local guardians. Today we saw LOADS of stickleback, some eel, rainbow smelt, and HUGE pipefish

The most important study I've done in my career (25 yrs ago) revealed that freshwater animals were disappearing 5X faster than land animals in N. America -a loss rate similar to tropical rainforests. I was naive enough to think this finding would change the focus of conservation.

Take a deep breath and come see what spectacular animals can be found in the south coast fjords of Newfoundland! We finished up a week of biodiversity surveys with guidance from Miawpukek First Nation’s marine guardians and documented some fantastic species!
