Lille busy prioritising walking and cycling - creating spaces where people can socialise, shop, and move through with ease. On highway space given over to cycle parking, cycle hire, EV vehicle charging and disabled parking. British cities take note.

Heritage highlight of the day: The Battle of Cable Street mural in Shadwell, Tower Hamlets, commemorates the defeat of fascist marchers by the people of East London in October 1936. Painted by Dave Binnington, Paul Butler, Ray Walker and Desmond Rochfort between 1979-83.

To those who came out peacefully to show London stands united against racism and Islamophobia last night—thank you. To our heroic police force working round the clock to keep Londoners safe—thank you. And to those far-right thugs still intent on sowing hatred and division—you

Following my interaction with ‘ARG Tickets Digital Assistant’, it’s reassuring AI still clearly has some way to go on its journey to world domination - however, it has meant I’m no closer to understanding how to get on a waitlist for Macbeth Harold Pinter Theatre - can a human help?

Had a lovely conversation with John Simmerman from Active Towns - now up on YouTube. We had a ride through Vauxhall and Oval, talking about the importance of activating London’s streets and engagement. m.youtube.com/watch?v=w_wpaW…

This is what happens when you leave architects just to get on with it. If they’d done any sort of engagement or co-production with accessibility groups, this would never have left the page.

As someone who doesn't own a car and takes two kids in by bike every day: this is absolutely not it. People drive short journeys because of structural failures and crap infrastructure. This kind of moralising is completely useless for changing that.

It’s easy to take night buses (and now tube) as an absolute given in London - if we want people to drive less, we have to provide them with safe and accessible options to do so. Greet to see it starting to happen (again) in Manchester.

The Economist just published a deeply-researched story about car bloat, and it's very, very damning: "For every life that the heaviest 1% of SUVs and trucks save, there are more than a dozen lives lost in other vehicles." Well worth your time: economist.com/interactive/un…

Good news: more children are walking, cycling and taking public transport to school since the introduction of the ULEZ in central London. Not only is the ULEZ helping tackle London’s toxic air, but it is also encouraging families to be more active. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…
