Arlington National Cemetery was established on the old home and estate of Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s old family home. Union generals wanted to make sure that Arlington would never again be occupied by Lee and his family:

Michael Beschloss Especially the Quartermaster General Montgomery Meigs who had been friends with Lee in the 1850s in Corps of Engineer work at St Louis on Mississippi. Meigs never forgave Lee his treason, created the Cemetery in 1864 ( to Mary Lee's indignation) and lost a son near end of the war
