Brooklyn recorded the fewest shootings ever in the between June and August, the DA says. But despite that decrease, more New Yorkers have died of gun violence in the borough so far this year than in the other 4. gothamist.com/news/brooklyn-… vía @gothamist

Me and my colleagues at Gothamist & @wnyc spent the last 10 months poring over 100s of lawsuits filed last year by women who say they were sexually assaulted by city employees while they were held at Rikers Island. My final story is out today. This is what we found, a 🧵:

While Mayor Adams & others downplayed the shooting at the West Indian Day parade, 25 y/o Denzel Chan’s family is mourning. He was killed yesterday afternoon along the parade route when someone opened fire, injuring 4 others. W Charles Lane gothamist.com/news/man-dies-… vía @gothamist

Nothing to see here. Just a police department with leaders entangled in a federal investigation ejecting reporters from the press room

NYC had far fewer homicides & shootings in August compared to past years. The reasons for the decline are complex, but largely mirror national trends. Still, it wasn’t good news for everyone. Shootings are up in several Queens precincts. gothamist.com/news/nyc-had-s… vía @gothamist

Between the NYPD commissioner resigning and a suspected school shooter on the UWS (luckily a false alarm), it's been a tough few hours. But my heart is with my WNYC 🎙 colleagues who were laid off today. Our CEO announced that 26 roles were cut, 12 of which were voluntary layoffs.

Heartbroken to lose Jaclyn Jeffrey-Wilensky — she leaves behind an incredible legacy of helping NYers with her data stories. She’s the reason we have our gun violence map, and she is so, so brilliant. We lost some other amazing people from our newsroom yesterday. Please please hire them.

The latest: The NYPD is now looking for a man they say took a knife from the scene of the subway shooting. It’s reportedly the knife Mickles had when police shot him. Charles Lane Giulia Heyward Bahar Ostadan gothamist.com/news/man-sough…

There have been 2 NYPD shootings within 48 hours where police tried to use a Taser first and it "didn't work." It turns out, NYPD Tasers fail 40% of the time gothamist.com/news/tasers-fa…
