Only a single male Willow Emerald seen at my local site for these today. It did pose very well though. A late female Banded Demoiselle was a surprise sighting. British Dragonfly Society Sussex Wildlife Trust π¦

Lisa Saw was one side of the butterfly, and I was the other side, as after 40 odd minutes of watching him land on various perches, he finally landed on this Knapweed giving us a more pleasing photo. After a few brief sightings of Long-tailed Blues recently, I was very happy to have about 45 mins photographing this gorgeous male. He kept landing on different flowers, plants and grasses all within a few metres of each other. Finally, a nice pose!

Bob Eade and I were looking for Silver-spotted Skippers this wkd on the #SouthDowns . I was thrilled to find this pair mating. I was even able to witness her walking around the flower, trying to detach from the male before flying off. Fabulous!

Good to see some Sussex Wood White yesterday. 11 seen including some courtship and egg laying and a mating pair, although the male was dead, but still attached. He had abdomen damage so it probably wasn't dying of over excitement! Sussex Butterfly Conservation Butterfly Conservation Sussex Wildlife Trust π¦
I managed my Wider Butterfly Survey today on the edge of Friston Forest. Highlights were a wonderful Red Admiral that was totally showing off, and a funky fly, the male Phasia hemiptera. What a beast. Sussex Wildlife Trust π¦ Sussex Butterfly Conservation
On a lovely walk a couple of weeks ago with Lisa Saw and Clare at Graffham, two beautiful examples of summer butterflies. A stunning Comma followed by a newly emerged Small Copper. Even better as the sun was actually shining!! Sussex Wildlife Trust π¦ Sussex Butterfly Conservation
With many butterfly species lower than expected in number, 2 exceptions are Gatekeeper and Brown Argus. In one small area on the South Downs there are around 1000 Brown Argus. An unbelievable number and an incredible sight. Sussex Butterfly Conservation Butterfly Conservation Sussex Wildlife Trust π¦ South Downs National Park

It was like a scene from outside a 1970s disco last night in my garden!! I thought I was going to film a mating pair of Hedgehog when a rival male turned up from the green corner. Sussex Wildlife Trust π¦ Chris Packham BBC Springwatch Hedgehog Society
A stunning fresh female Gatekeeper from this morning. Note the extra large eye spot. The County recorder confirms that this is an ab. anticrasipuncta. The 2nd of these I've seen. This one a much fresher individual.

A gorgeous Grayling shielding itself from the wind this morning. It was lovely to get up on the South Downs with Bob Eade and see my first one of the year, exactly 1 year on from my first ever sighting.
