We’re putting explicit teaching at the core of teaching and learning. And don’t take explicit teaching to mean strict or simple methods. It’s the opposite: sophisticated, inclusive, highly interactive techniques and interventions. Teachers do a tough job and I stand with them.

Our school serves a community with lots of new (often temporary) migrants. This Gr 3 kid arrived in Jan with very little English, ADHD, ASD and no experience of the bar model used at our school. So, to see him do this level of work independently in Sep is very satisfying.

I taught Gr 3 LONG DIVISION for the 1st time. I anticipated it being tricky, so I PULLED OUT ALL THE STOPS. Used concrete materials as I modeled the procedure. Co-constructed a VIP. Used backwards fading with guided practice. AND THEY GOT IT! I’m embarrassingly thrilled by this.
