No, just no. No barriers, no walls, no curtains, no basal freezing or water draining. No direct intervention, no puppeteering glaciers and ocean currents. We control only the amount of CO2 we spew into the atmosphere, not the dynamics of an ice sheet.

The article pushes false balance to the limits, as if there are two equal camps on this. It is also misleading. As far as I'm aware none of "the researchers involved in the studies" of Thwaites and Pine Island glaciers think such massive intervention is a good idea or feasible.

I said this the other day, in a response to a similar tweet by the same account, we do not control ocean currents and we do not control ice sheets. A "sea curtain" is not only impossibly ambitious, but also potentially catastrophic. Scientists do not support this. Delete!

Yale Environment 360 Scientists, particularly the glaciologists who study Thwaites glacier, have expressed their overwhelming opposition to these half-baked ideas promoted by a tiny minority. Why do you continue with stories like this?

I think Antarctica is interesting enough that you actually don't need to sensationalize it with aliens, conspiracy theories, and hidden horrors beneath the ice... Think of all the interesting physics that could've been explained here instead.

What is going on with Yale Environment 360 and sea curtains??? Despite massive pushback from the scientific community, Yale Environment 360 continues to push for unrealistic and unethical manipulation of the Thwaites glacier system.

The crazy thing about East Antarctica's ice growth is how it's more than offset by West Antarctica's ice retreat, and that the author of this "story we haven't heard" is likely cherry-picking only the last couple years of the GRACE record.

Like the beginning of every semester, a sudden uptick in workload has prevented me from writing 😔 But I'll try to get a new post out as soon as I can! In the meantime, read about the role volcanoes have in Antarctic glaciology: open.substack.com/pub/glaciersan…
