They say that 100 years ago people would come to take holidays in Bratton, in a chalet owned by The Duke, up on the hillside overlooking the church. With a living room, a kitchen and 6 bunk beds, in its lifetime it had been used by teachers, students, boy scouts and war evacuees.

They say that the monument perched high on Picquet Hill was created by William Gale for the millennium. A plaque attached to the Purbeck stones points to locations across the magnificent panoramic view from this look out point. People now scatter ashes and leave flowers there.

They say that at one time children of the village were told that whenever there was a full moon the White Horse would come down off the hill and be seen drinking at a trough in Bratton.

I started photographing the Wiltshire landscape in late 2016, and have thousands of images in my archive. So I thought I would slowly make my way through them and share the journey, with a daily photo of Wiltshire. This one was taken in April 2017, and while a lot of my pics

Two weeks today I am running an event in Chippenham exploring the lives of women before 1600 with some Victoria County History friends. It is of the Maud’s Way project. See 👇 I am excited, but nervous as I usually participate in things rather than organise things.😅

They say that in 1936 Philip Smith planted an orchard to grow and sell 10 types of apples. In 1989 Marjorie Reeves bought and donated the orchard to the village. Today it contains all 28 varieties of apple known to have grown in Wiltshire.

They say that the village had its own petrol station for nearly 40 years from 1957. Castle Garage, on Westbury Road, was where Doug Reed carried out repairs, pumped fuel, provided a taxi service, ran coach trips, and sold cigarettes, sweets and ice lollies.
