Cammy Days now says: 'We’re not stopping homeowners from renting out a spare room.'
I've obviously asked how many licensing exemptions they council has specifically approved for the Edinburgh Festivals in August, as they promised they'd do to support the festivals. edinburgh.gov.uk/downloads/file…

Edinburgh City Council leader Cammy Day told me more than a year ago that this issue would be addressed to ensure folk could easily rent out a spare room or their own home to performers & festivalgoers. Not sure if any progress has been made since then...

It’s common sense that people should be allowed to put up a performer in a spare room or let out their own home during a major event without having to jump through hoops.
Those scenarios are very different to running multiple holiday flats in a city with a chronic housing crisis.

The Scottish Government & the city council need to wake up & sit down with the Fringe Society to come up with a short, medium & long-term accommodation & public transport plan for the Edinburgh Festivals to make them as accessible as possible. Turning a blind eye is too easy & unacceptable.

The sheer greed of holiday flat landlords has been the scourge of the Fringe as long as I can recall. They’ll charge as much as they can get away with. Hotel operators are not much better. Their mindset isn’t going to change given the level of demand to be in Ed in Aug.

Am I the only one on here who thinks that big-name stand up comedy shows & tours outwith the Fringe are now “prohibitively expensive” for many folk? I see some Fringe alumni are charging up to £125 a ticket for a seat now. £35 starting price now not uncommon in Scottish venues.

Gutted to see the redundancies at openDemocracy - the UK is losing so many vital independent journalists and outlets at the moment, there are real implications for scrutiny of politicians and corporates. Solidarity with everyone laid off.

'We see the art you manage to produce with not only the pressures that your white colleagues face but with the added traumatic hurdle of misogynoir.'

Campaign for the Arts strongly condemns the racial abuse faced by Francesca Amewudah-Rivers this week.

Edinburgh's ridiculous housing problem summed up in a nutshell. A city centre flat that the owner spends just four weeks in.
Tens of thousands of folk are working in the arts, tourism & hospitality sectors in Edinburgh year round. They should be able to live in the city centre!

You’d have to live in cloud-cuckoo land to think that an unregulated housing market in Edinburgh or anywhere else is a good thing for artists and performers. But there should be bit of flexibility over putting something up in a spare room during an event, as was promised in Ed.

One of them has just been in touch to tell me I'm to blame for the cost of accommodation in Edinburgh in August. That's a new one!
