As the Georgian #KGB was getting ready for the international expo "RESORTS-86" in Tbilisi in 1986, the deputy chairman General Otar Khatiashvili sent a secret telegram to KGBs of other republics & the 6th Directorate in Moscow asking about compromising info on any participants.⬇️

Great article! Zach Dorfman If #KGB officers involved came from the republican KGBs in Ukraine or the Baltics, or depended on them for cooperation, it might be possible to locate their reports & identify the Austrian who must've preferred his martini shaken, not stirred.

What can you tell about an organization from the library it keeps? In my paper for the upcoming Society for Intelligence History conference, I'll generate insights about #KGB from the destroyed library of the KGB School in Vilnius which I re-constituted through archival research at Hoover Institution.

In the opening paragraph, Dr Daniela Richterova mentioned Rodin/Korovin, the head of the infamous 13th Dept of KGB's 1st Chief Directorate. See who else thought Korovin was important: "13. What was Korovin doing in London in 1961?" From Edward Jay Epstein's book Deception (1989).⬇️

One of the most egregious fakes I came across in top secret Soviet state security documents: "In 1940, ZONTER [Sorge] was killed by Japanese gendarmes." Signed by Lt. Lobachev, Investigative Unit, #NKVD Transport Directorate, Feb. 13, 1943. From the Volkogonov Collection.

I highly recommend this new book by my colleague Sergei Zhuk. I wrote a blurb for the back cover. "Zhuk documents an eerie tale of #KGB's infiltration of Western universities & East-West academic exchange during the Cold War." Some methods & techniques never change. ⬇️

This #KGB doc gives an inside view of KGB domestic HUMINT roles in the 1980s. There were 3 basic roles: agents, rezidents, and safehouse owners, with further distinctions: active or in preparations. Every municipal #KGB unit was required to report the number of each to HQ.

For my paper at Society for Intelligence History conference in February 2025, I am archivally reconstituting the titles at the top secret Special Library of #KGB School No. 303 in Vilnius destroyed or transferred in 1960. When I am done, I'll have listed more than 600 - mostly unknown - titles.

This remarkably revealing #CIA map declassified 20 years ago shows how little we still publicly know about the CIA's successes in penetrating the USSR in the 1950s. In addition to #GRU officer Pyotr Popov, there were 20 other agents-in-place whose stories remain to be told.

This map was a part of #CIA's "Inspector General's Survey of the Soviet Russia Division, June 1956." The report had more than 100 pages but only 13 were declassified in 2004. (tinyurl.com/5e74zk53) Today I filed a #FOIA request with the CIA to declassify the entire report.

#CIA's Cleveland C. Cram wrote a top secret report "A Review of Counterintel Literature, 1975-92" partially declassified in 2017. Looks like he believed that #KGB's dissolution would stop Russian intelligence disinfo, subversion & penetration attempts. This did not age well.

Sometimes in Russian #intel files I come across a document marked as COPY OF A COPY (see below). I always wonder who has the original and whether the original - if it still exists - will ever see the light of day.
