Something to remember while Republicans hyper-focus on abortion later in pregnancy:

The demographic most likely to have abortions at or after 21 weeks are children 14 years old and under.

See that chart? That's the US suicide rate--and it's on a steep, steep rise.

Suicides in the U.S. are more common now than at any time since World War II. The growing despair of American life. Stressors are hitting from every angle, and we're only beginning to understand it. 1/6

Self-managed abortions enable people to have abortions on their own terms, surrounded by the people they love.

But it’s also being increasingly criminalized.

Here’s what you need to know [a thread 🧵]

Your *ahem* weekly reminder that 'spreading' HIV, COVID or any infectious disease should indeed go 'unpunished.'

Why? Because 1) Legal punishment doesn't work; 2) It can do HARM by disincentivizing testing; 3) This framework completely misunderstands how diseases spread.

STOP!

There's this pesky assumption that support for abortion is incongruous with parenthood, ignoring the fact that people who have abortions are often parents.

New research makes another key point: becoming a parent seems to *increase* support for abortion. link.springer.com/article/10.100…

In true ADHD fashion I have dear friends getting married tomorrow. I just now realized there’s a back of the invitation and the wedding is at an entirely different time and place than I thought

I personally know 5 people that recently traveled and are now COVID+. Please be cautious and wear masks for the next couple months as it becomes more clear cases are surging.

New data from @marchofdimes shows 6M+ US women live in maternity care deserts or areas with limited maternity care, isolating them from lifesaving services. We deserve access to reproductive care in our own communities. This status quo is unacceptable.

PTSD is not a sufficient diagnosis for people marinated in abuse and terror over an extended period of time. Complex trauma involves interpersonal violence that is usually repeated and chronic over time and involves profound relational betrayal, deception and coercion.

Nearly 2 million American women live in a county without abortion access *or* maternal health care. It's not hard to see where this is going.

The fact people don’t understand Covid damages the immune system in the same way as HIV is a public health failure.

Is it normal to be burned out and ready to drop out when you start the dissertation stage or should I seriously begin to reevaluate?

Things like ADHD, autism, depression, OCD, PTSD, bipolar disorder, BPD, and so many others aren’t “status symbols” or a cool kid’s club. The idea that anyone is out here shopping for specific mental health diagnoses is 100% built on ableism. It just doesn’t happen.

As a disability studies scholar and disabled person in the academy, comments like this are precisely why many students, staff, and faculty choose to not disclose their disability—or only do so under duress due to academic ableism or navigating the inaccessibility of higher ed.
