“quae modo dicta mea est, quam coepi solus amare,
cum multis vereor ne sit habenda mihi.
fallimur, an nostris innotuit illa libellis?
sic erit—ingenio prostitit illa meo.
et merito! quid enim formae praeconia feci?...

- An intricate geometric mosaic from the Villa of Poseidon at Zeugma, centred on an emblema of Perseus releasing Andromeda. He still carries the head of Medusa, the slain sea-monster, Ketos, lies at his feet: ca. Late 2nd Century AD.

- A delightful labyrinth panel from the central peristyle of the House of the Fountains at Conimbriga, Portugal: ca. Late 3rd Century AD. The element fits the peristyle's decorative theme of mythological heroes.

- A colossal mosaic floor from İncesu, Turkey: ca. Late 3rd-4th Century AD. Covering the floor of what appears to have been an imperial Roman villa, the panels of geometric patterns, commissioned by one Hyacinthus, are staggering.

A nice little moment in teaching Amores 1.9 today with 'ingenii est experientis amor'. Later, Ovid will go on to use the same term to describe Odysseus ('comes experientis Ulixis' at Met. 14.159), so it was fun knocking around ideas as to how that could affect the reading.

Just getting in on the Jon Pertwee commemorations. The grand 'Dandy' of the Doctors Who! It was the BBC re-runs of his serials (especially 'The Sea Devils') that got me into Who in the first place.

Remember, when in doubt, reverse the polarity of the neutron flow!😊
