A wonderful depiction of the by artist and coal miner Tom McGuinness.

The great pitman painter was born in Witton Park, County Durham, in 1926.

He created this magnificent oil painting of The Big Meeting in 1976.

45 years ago today, Blair Peach, a schoolteacher and anti-racist campaigner, died as a result of being hit over the head by police. He, along with thousands of others, was demonstrating against the National Front in Southall. Rest in power.

The Durham Miners Hall was once known as the 'Pitman's Parliament', giving a voice to miners in a time when most did not have a vote. Styled on a Methodist chapel, each pit had a 'seat' for a representative. Today it continues to be a space for activism and cultural practice. πŸ›οΈ
