#NowSpinning More Mahler. Some comparative listening on the 118th anniversary of the work’s premiere. That’s this evening done for. And my nerves.

#TryThis if you want to hear some pretty obscure, but high quality music, how about trying Arnell’s Symphony No.3. You’ll hear some interesting echos of Nielsen in there, but it’s generally pretty original, easily appealing stuff.

#NowSpinning I love this Mahler 5 from Honeck. He delivers a darkly weighty performance with absolutely nothing held back. The orchestra sounds like a sumptuous beast. It’s all steel and velvet.

#NowSpinning Ančerl’s Petrushka. Boy do I love this. The raw, unblended but totally electrifying sound of the Czech Philharmonic of that particular period is a wonder to behold. This is thrilling!

Let’s hope the new edition helps bring this huge canvass home and out of the cold. It’s magical, mysterious and sumptuous.
