Guksi, & other Sámi crafts, are an embodiment of the Sámi circular economy. The guksi holds cultural significance, symbolizing a close relationship between Sámi & nature. Guksi are multifunctional, & can also be used for berry picking such as now during cloudberry season.

Many Arctic communities are remote, which creates challenges with centralized waste management systems. Land & resources are limited, making backhaul of waste necessary in some communities. Backhaul of waste protects subsistence resources, creates jobs & prevents pollution.

Fast ice occurs in both the Arctic and Antarctic regions. It forms in narrow bands typically up to 200 km wide and varies in thickness. Fast usually forms in the fall and lasts through winter. In summer, rising water and air temperatures cause some fast ice to melt.
