Congo’s peat remains threatened by oil exploration even after the 2023 law banning industrial activities on peat. This also threatens the livelihood of the local population who rely on peat forest for fishing. @congopeat Simon Lewis

Our stay in the forest in Cuvette, Republic of Congo, shows that peat forest plays an essential part in the life of the villagers living near it. Firstly for fish - and fishing is the main source of food and income. 1/ 🧵

Today we start research in another area of peatland forest in northern Congo, in an area dominated by logging companies. We will seek the views of people living in forest concessions about protection options and community development.
