Born 50 years ago today in Novokuznetsk, RSFSR (USSR) - grandmaster Gata Kamsky.
A former world #4 (in July 1995, behind Kasparov, Karpov & Ivanchuk), in 1996 he challenged Karpov for the FIDE World Championship. A World Cup winner in 2007, he has been U.S. Champion 5 times.

Boris Gulko (b. Erfurt, BRD, 1947), pictured in play at the 'National Tournament of 3 Teams', Moscow, April 1973.
Gulko later became the only person to win both the Soviet & U.S. Championships. He also has a +ve score v. Kasparov (+3,-1,=3).

Until recently I hadn't seen Boris Gulko's 'Lessons with a Grandmaster', co-authored with Joel Sneed and published in three volumes by Everyman Chess. It is absolutely superb.
