Seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones explains why Monday's 4.4 magnitude #earthquake might have felt stronger for some people as compared to other recent earthquakes. ▶️ youtube.com/watch?v=bkbEko…

I need to clarify about seismicity rates in SoCal. Long term average since 1932 is ~10-12 M4s /yr. In the last 20 years, we have averaged about 5 /yr. So far in 2024, we have had 13 M4s. So lots of variability but 2024 is closer to normal than the quiet of the last 2 decades

The Puente Hills thrust fault system is buried and cannot be seen on the Earth's surface. It was defined by the work of many scientists in Statewide California Earthquake Center in the 1980s and 90s. It has been in the national seismic hazard database since the early 2000s

“I would rather think of it as a reminder that we've got this really bad, active fault right underneath us. Don't forget. We need to take the risk seriously. But it really doesn't allow us to say with any certainty what's coming,” Dr. Lucy Jones says. 🔗kcrw.com/news/shows/pre…

I should have been clearer. This is the number of sequences with at least one M≥4 event. What we call a "declustered catalog". Otherwise all you see are the years with a M7 and all its aftershocks. 2010 is seeing aftershocks to a M7.2 in Baja.

“This is a great reminder that all of #SouthernCalifornia is #earthquake country. Every one of us in the #LosAngeles Metropolitan Area is within five miles of an active fault." - Dr. Lucy Jones stated. 🔗 nbclosangeles.com/news/earthquak…

#AutoEQ A magnitude 3.9 (MI) #earthquake has occurred 4 mi W of Lake Elsinore, CA at 09:39 PDT Aug 15, 2024 [2024-08-15 16:39 UTC]. #SCSN has not yet confirmed this event. For more info visit earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/ev…

"The farther it goes, the longer [the earthquake] lasts, and the more energy that's released. So the longer the fault, the bigger the #earthquake," explains seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones, a researcher at Caltech and former seismologist with the USGS. 🔗bbc.com/future/article…

‘Too unstable’: Landslide forcing electricity cutoff to Rancho Palos Verdes homes. Tectonic forces are all expressing the inevitability of gravity. Those of us who live in tectonically active regions should remember that we can’t stop gravity latimes.com/california/sto…

Today we are having a small swarm in the Fontana Seismicity Lineation, a northeast-striking line of many small quakes. Today we have so far M3.9, M3.5 and many M1s and M2s. I've seen this tyoe of cluster in Fontana dozens of times in my decades watching SoCal quakes.

Every culture in the world with earthquakes has a tradition of "Earthquake weather" - and it is the weather they had for their most memorable quake. Today's quakes are one of many this year - most of which happened when it wasn't hot. podbean.com/eas/pb-begkq-1…

I was going to argue about the maximum magnitude comment, sure that I remembered bigger ones in the past. But I searched the catalog and the largest quake of the last 90 years is the same M3.9 in 1953

Nice cup of morning JOLT! Just had a M4.7 earthquake centered near Malibu. Could possibly be on either the Anacapa-Dume or Malibu Coast Fault Zones (both are nearby). #earthquake

California is covered pretty well with seismic instruments and they recorded the shaking from this morning's M4.7 earthquake near Malibu. Highest ground accelerations (0.19g) were measured at Lake Sherwood in Thousand Oaks and Agoura Hills (0.10g). #earthquake

I didn't feel a thing - I was in the middle of my morning exercise routine, quite a ways from this M4.7 5 miles north of Malibu. Below are the M≥4s for 2024

If it feels like there have been many strong earthquakes this year, it's because there have been. But why is this happening? @drlucyjones sat down with ABC7 Eyewitness News Eyewitness News to discuss Thursday's earthquake in #Malibu and what it means for #SoCal. youtube.com/watch?v=w9O2MP…
