The conversation about contextualising exam results, without KS2 data needs energising in preparation for next year. How do we fairly identify schools which add significant value to the children they serve? How do we celebrate beyond flat attainment, which often reflects intake?

The night before results in my 2nd year as a head. Small, very low ability group. Was very worried so brought up their pictures to guess scores. But started laughing, remembering so many great times - it was very calming. So now do it every year as a ritual. Good luck to everyone

Manchester is grey and stormy this morning but there’s much excitement and anticipation for this morning’s results! The first group of Y11s showed up at 6am. Can’t wait to see the class of 2024 and celebrate with them some record breaking results. Feels like ages since our Prom!!

The graduation ceremony for our summer school - our new Y7 have hugely impressed this week and we’re excited for the new yellow tie cohort to join us! Thanks so much to our amazing staff who have delivered such an action packed week and to Manchester United Foundation for their support.

Me, on holiday picking my fantasy football team ‘this season I am not picking Haaland, avoiding the pack’. My son ‘think that’s a mistake, you’ll never catch up’. Me ‘nope, have a feeling this isn’t his year’. Week 2. Bottom of all leagues, season and pundit career in tatters.

Just finished David Nicholls’ ‘You Are Here’ after a summer of long, more gruelling novels. It is hilarious, romantic and lovely and I will now spend days casting the inevitable movie. Lovely end of summer treat.

Setting expectations in those first few lessons…. Don’t waste time lecturing pupils about your expectations. Get straight into the teaching, the content, your routines. The kids don’t need a hour long talk about who you are & your rules etc.

Sir, my timetable is wrong. It’s Wednesday not Monday. 10 times already! Comic moment of realisation. How quickly a school settles after the summer is a sign of culture and from the word go today Manchester Academy have been exemplary. Apart from all the Man Utd trolling from Y11.

Leadership is all about with new challenges & dealing with the unexpected. So this week, I have been dealing with the abundance of goose dung from the flock of Canadian geese who made our field their home over the summer. One lad explained that in Christmas Carol they ate goose!
