#OTD in 1968, four days after his self-immolation in protest against the Warsaw Pact invasion of Czechoslovakia, Ryszard Siwiec succumbed to his wounds in a Warsaw hospital. The communist authorities suppressed information about the incident and tarnished Ryszard’s reputation.

#OTD 100 years ago, Gen. Sikorski ordered the creation of the Border Protection Corps, tasked with defending Poland's eastern border against Soviet aggression, provocation and terrorism. After WW2 began, the Corps was absorbed into the Polish Army.

Gen. Jan Kazimierz Kruszewski, an associate of Józef Piłsudski, served as commander of Poland's Border Protection Corps from 1930 to 1939. He defended Poland during the 1939 German invasion, spent WW2 in a POW camp, and after the war lived abroad until his death in 1977.

Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński was interned from 1953 to 1956 for defying the communist attempts to dominate the Church. He later led the Millennium of Poland's Baptism celebrations and promoted Polish-German reconciliation. He died in 1981 and was beatified #OTD in 2021.

Stanisław Lem was born #OTD in 1921 to a family of Polish Jews. He survived both Soviet and German occupations, and escaped death in German-perpetrated Holocaust on many occasions. After WW2, he became one of the most popular sci-fi writers thanks to works such as "Solaris."

Amon Göth was executed #OTD in 1946 in Cracow. He was one of the people responsible for the liquidation of Cracow and Tarnów ghettos in occupied Poland, during which the Germans killed tens of thousands of Jews, and in the years 1943-1944 served as the commandant of KL Plaszow.

Gen. Antoni Listowski was a WW1 veteran, who joined the Polish Army in 1918. He then served in the Polish-Ukrainian war and commanded troops in the Polish-Bolshevik war. Later, Listowski organized help for the people with vision impairments. He passed away #OTD in 1927.

Eighty years ago, in early September, the Belgian city of Ypres was liberated from German occupation by the 1st Polish Armored Division. The local residents were immensely grateful for their freedom and celebrated their liberators in the days that followed.
