Trump and Vance's racist smears of Haitians - who are legally present in Springfield, Ohio - has led to bomb threats closing City Hall, schools and a motor vehicles office. Now two hospitals closed due to bomb threats. fox8.com/news/springfie…

Looked at the primary studies & wouldn't trust this for now. That severely depressed folks score lower on performance tasks isn't surprising (esp time-consuming & demanding tasks). And the 1 longitudinal study found a hazard ratio of 1.04 where the CI included 1.00.

Had a little time today to mess around w/ some potential 2024-25 winter analogs based on a slew of weighted oceanic, atmospheric, & extraneous factors. I'm generally pretty happy w/ how the weighted analog composite mean SSTa came out near initialization... (1/?)

Not for nothing but every time you say "reviewers shouldn't have to review code because not enough of them know how to code" you are literally saying "modeling is reviewed by people who aren't competent to review modeling" Correct. Exactly. 💯. You get it.

A reminder that proteins are highly dynamic molecules. ◼ We have made progress in measuring & predicting static protein structures, but the dynamics that animate life remain challenging to measure & model.

When I teach the Central Limit Theorem (CLT), I start by explaining the theory, then I engage students using my interactive #Python dashboard. Together, we select a parametric distribution, increase the number of random variables, and watch in real time as the distribution of the

Whenever I'm given a dataset to clean, the first thing I ask for (or create myself) is a data dictionary that outlines the plan (what exists in the raw data/what should exist in the clean data). A data dictionary is a roadmap for your cleaning process. 🛣️ cghlewis.com/blog/data_dict…

Does the brain change during pregnancy? You bet it does. How about doing 26 MRI scans on a single person pre-conception to 2 years post-partum. WOW! Laura Pritschet and colleagues nailed it with their new paper in Nature Neuroscience. Key Points: - The authors point out that pregnancy

To help my students comprehend artificial neural networks (ANN), including initialization, backpropagation, and updating, I built an ANN from scratch and developed a custom interactive #Python dashboard using Matplotlib. Now, when I teach these concepts, students engage in

Did you know that NFL kickers have made 35 of 39 field goal attempts from 50+ yards through two weeks? Ka’imi Fairbairn (6) and Chris Boswell (4) are the only kickers in NFL history to make 4+ field goals of 50+ yards through two weeks of a season.

Two years ago, we demonstrated that the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic likely began at the Huanan Market via zoonosis resulting from the wildlife trade. Many unanswered questions remained about the animals themselves. Some answers, out today in Cell. cell.com/cell/fulltext/…

Hard times for #lableak truthers ahead. They lost on evidence and that will never, ever change. The facts will always work against their false belief. They can build a cult around it, but anybody who values reality is better served by going with the scientific consensus.

A traveled to the top of a Volcano in Hawaii to capture this: Saturn briefly covered by the moon. One of the most difficult shots I’ve captured and a bucket list moment, this event gave me a new perspective on the solar system. I’ll have it available in print for a short time.

There was an interesting discussion earlier in the week as to whether a linear mixed model can provide a calibrated test for selection in the presence of drift alone. This is actually pretty straightforward to simulate to let's take a look: 🧵
