In 2020, the South African government banned alcohol sales as part of their COVID measures. Then they lifted the ban, and then brought it back unexpectedly, and then did that again Every ban saw murders decline, and every reprieve saw them return. Stunningly, prohibition worked:

FIRE's new survey of 59k college students is out. Unfortunately, a significant percentage of them have disastrously illiberal ideas about free speech. - 32% said that using violence to stop a campus speech is acceptable to some degree — up from 27% last year and 20% two years

This is part of my argument for a larger CTC funded by reallocating the childcare tax credit money. You can spend the larger CTC on daycare, or you could use it to defray costs of converting a garage into an in-law suite--or paying your collge-aged sister. (Or working less).

My *most* normal trait might be the fact that, like most moms, formal childcare isn’t my preference for my babies when they’re little. Solution-neutral aid to parents helps us pick the care options that make sense for *our* family.

I really think it’d be wise for Dems to adopt a home child care allowance as part of their childcare proposals. It’s good policy and it diffuses an attack from the right. Don’t let childcare get sucked any further into the culture wars

Leaking these emails and making an exchange of thoughts on areas of bipartisan interest into a partisan attack is a bad look for Kunce. Congress would function better if more members took Hawley’s approach and solicited a wide range of views to inform their approach to hearings.

Even if you think it's net good that this happened, the transitions are gnarly, for a bunch of reasons. 1) Debt and pension obligations are a lot easier to handle if total GDP--not just per-capita GDP--is growing. 2) Even per capita GDP probably grows slower in aging societies,

“Marcusen said replacing a competitive socket had cost her $20,000 in the past. ‘I work full time to like set aside money to pay for legs,’ she said. ‘I don’t have a car payment. I have a leg payment.’” nytimes.com/2024/09/05/wor…
