Just published Journal of African Archaeology! At #amarawest in Upper #Nubia, large pyramid tombs contained the burials of those migrated from elsewhere, likely Egypt: so final phases of the pharaonic colonial project (c1300-1070BCE) relied on elite mobility #Sudan doi:10.1163/21915784-bja10033

Some of mid-tier pyramid tombs contained both local and non-local individuals, but all those analysed from chamber and niche tombs were of local origin (as were individuals buried after the end of pharaonic rule).

The study, with Michaela Binder Prof Jamie Woodward Michele Buzon, Antonio Simonetti & Mark Macklin brings together archaeological, bioarchaeological, epigraphic + strontium isotope evidence from British Museum fieldwork in #Sudan (2008-2019). Funded by The British Academy The Leverhulme Trust
